We are pretty obsessed with Pinterest over here! We've been playing on Pinterest since Nov. 2010, and it still hasn't gotten old yet because there are always so many cute things to find all the time!

We are under the impression that the only thing better than Pinterest is a contest involving Pinterest and winning fabric! So here it comes....

Starting Monday, December 5 we will begin our 24 Days of Christmas give away! Okay, so I’m running a little late with this, but there are still 24 gifts to give away so on Wednesdays and Saturdays we will have 2 chances to win!

Unfortunately for our online customers this promotion is in-store only, however I may have a few days of online giveaways to coincide with this promotion so keep in touch!

Every day I will send out an announcement via email and on Facebook about that day’s gift. Each day the winner will be selected by different criteria. Oh, Dear Stella!!

We are very excited to announce that we have an exclusive line of fabric in our shop!!! Okay, so maybe it isn't completely exclusive, but really we are 1 of about 20 shops that have it so I think it counts as exclusive.

I love the beautiful shades of blue in each of the pieces! I am torn, however, in choosing my favorite. So my two top favorites include the Paris piece and the birds of course.

Also if you visit Dear Stella website you will see a place for her projects. This super cute elephant is a FREE DOWNLOAD! Who doesn't love free patterns especially when they create such cute bundles of joy!?

College Football

College Football starts this weekend. Truth be told I had to Google it and then clarify with a man in the shop so I understood what came up in Google before I actually learned this great seasonal event started tomorrow.

Anyway, the important thing for you to know is that we have team fabrics in the shop, both OU and OSU fabrics.

They are a medium/small-medium print so they are great for lots of different uses, from quilts and seat covers, to purses and tailgate picnic bags. Hurry and start making your team spirit projects soon before the season's over.

It is a week long event where she will learn about the new machines being released, new software (like the quilt motion software demonstration above), and other new promotions. Saturday Sampler Update!

The Saturday Sampler quilts are done! You will have a choice of two colorways!

We are going to start this block of the month club in October. There is no sign-up fee. All you have to do is pay $5 for your first block, and then attend the next meeting with your completed block to receive the next kit free! You can make a complete quilt top for $5 if you attend all the meetings! If you miss one meeting then the next kit will cost $5, but your kits after that will be free if you continue to attending the club meetings with completed blocks.

If you are an online customer and would like to participate that is fine too! Since you won't be attending the meetings you will have to pay each month, plus shipping, but that it is still only going to be $7.50 per month (including the shipping). You can pay for the program in full here, or register for the pay by month options here.

1001 Peeps

1001 Peeps by Lizzy House arrived in the shop a couple weeks ago. Isn't it really cute?! (You can get it on our website.)

Anita put it together with a few other pieces to make the "Charming Baby Log Cabin".

I think it is super darling. I'm not usually one to buy quilt kits, but this one is really begging to come home with me! We were day dreaming earlier about how it could be embellished. Imagine appliqueing a child's name across the bottom in the dark purple area, or adding a fun ric-rac. It is such a fun playful quilt.

If you are interested in a kit, they aren't available on the website yet, but you can email me. The kits are $42, plus $5 shipping, and you will receive the fabric and pattern need to complete this quilt. If you mention this blog post in your email I will slip a little extra something to get you started on a fun embellishment if you wish. Shop Flea Market!

I'm sure none of our friends can relate to us, but we tend to be pack rats with all of our stashes.

Example: I bought an antique milk bottle last month to use as a flower vase. It came with a slightly torn paper cap on it. I will never use it as a lid, but I had to stash it away in my stationary box just in case I find the perfect project for it later!

That is just a small example of my endeavors to save all the cute, pretty, and unique things I find. Now imagine that I'm just an amateur compared to all the other ladies in the shop and multiply that by the number of years we've been here! We have quite a lot of collections in every nook and cranny of this place. So we've decided it is time to share!

Here is how its going to work...

We are going to spend the next 6 weeks cleaning, sorting, pricing, and all together organizing our "overstuffing".

During this time we will be giving you tickets. You will receive 1 ticket for every dollar you spend in the shop starting Monday, June 20th. You will get tickets for everything except class fees.

We may host special demos and events during the next 6 months that will give you the chance to earn bonus tickets so stay posted.

Then in August we will invite all of our ticket holders to an exclusive flea market event with all of our special collections and odds and ends at rock bottom prices. Your tickets will be what you will use to purchase these items so you will want to be sure to hang on to them.

Market Review - American Patchwork and Quilting

We just received an email from American Patchwork and Quilting today with their thoughts on Spring Quilt Market Trends this year. I've decided to add my personal observations to theirs.

Hand-embroidered embellishments, often just a simple backstitch, were on everything from quilts and pillows to purchased garments.

>>>I didn't notice this so much at quilt market, but looking at blogs I do see this more and more in some places. (Though I don't recall actually seeing it on clothing.)

Woodland creatures—owls, birds, foxes, turtles, hedgehogs, etc.—were seen on lots of fabrics. Circus animals are starting to appear.

>>>Woodland creatures have been around for several years now so I don't consider this new. However, the circus animals were definitely making a show in several different manufacturers. I think that we actually ordered three different lines of fabrics that have elephants on them, and as I said on Facebook while we were there, "Owls are out. Elephants are in." I'm pretty excited about it because as much as I love owls it is nice to see something different.

Many, many quilts featured solids mixed with prints. Modern and traditional also converged.

>>>Again, I don't consider this a trend. Maybe it is because I'm the youngest person in the shop. Maybe it is because I follow so many blogs, but either way I've been asking for more solids in the shop since I started working here. Using lots of solids has been a trend in the Modern Quilt Guild for quilt a while now, and it started before that.

There are alternatives to standard cotton fabrics, including laminates, vinyls, linens, linen blends, voiles, plush, and corduroy.

I've you've never felt a voile fabric my one word description would be "marshmallow". It is so soft and lightweight making it perfect for quilts, and summer clothing. I'm working on a quilt right now where I mix regular quilting cottons with voile, and it is my full intention to use voile on the back so I can melt into it!

Etsy Craft Party

Market Review - FreeSpirit/Westminster

Our first day of quilt market we met with our Wesminster/Freespirit rep, and we just about broke the bank after touring their booths. There were so many beautiful lines coming out that we could barely decide which ones to pick. Here are some sneak peaks at what will be coming in over the next few months.

Stitchers Unplugged - "Patchwork of the Crosses"

So you have already heard of our Stitchers Unplugged Hand Sewing group. Well, Betty sent me this picture last night.

I'm pretty sure that each of the pieces she uses are elongated hexagons. She is using "Lucy Boston: Patchwork of the Crosses" as the pattern and technique guide. She is definitely hooked, and doing great. I can't wait to see how it all comes together.

Saturday Sampler

We are going to have a Saturday Sampler in the shop! If you have never participated in a Saturday Sampler before it is a pretty interested concept. All it costs is $5 on the first month, and then each month after that the block is free if you come in on time with the finished block from the previous month!

The details haven't been completely hashed out yet, but the picture does show a rough draft example of one of the color ways the quilt will be in. There will be two possible colorways for you to choose from. When the rest of the details have been decided I will be sure to update the blog.

Market Review - Metropolitan Quilt - Paris

Metropolitan quilt was another new designer to Quilt Market this year. She had some really cute modern piecing and applique quilts. "Paris" is the pictured pattern, and the one I'm making as a shop sample first. This quilt is all piecing, and should finish at 60" x 72" if I do it correctly. However, after I'm finished using it as a shop sample I will probably add a border or 2, to it so that there is a little over-hang when I put it on the bed.

So far I've picked out the fabric. As you can see I've decided to go with Amy Butler's fabric for the most part. I do have a Valori Well's voile on the left acting as my "solid", and the white tone-on-tone is probably from P and B Fabrics. You can't see all of the fabrics perfectly in the picture because they are kind of crowded, but the one on the right is going to be the center panel. I think, and hope that it turns out was well as the quilt pictured on the pattern. I've started cutting it out, so the piecing is just around the corner. I'll be sure to upload more pictures as I continue to progress.

Stitchers Unplugged In Transit

The second Monday evening of each month we have a group of women who meet in the shop to do hand sewing projects, have a glass of wine, and socialize together. Chris has been working on the Pies and Tarts pattern. It is really fun to see how each pie or tart comes out because it is kind of hard to visualize the fabric before it is fussy cut and sewn.

While I haven't attended the Stitcher's Upnlugged group yet I still have some hand sewing of my own. I've started working with the classic English Paper Piecing technique - the hexagon. I have made over a hundred of them, and have enough to make maybe 2 potholders. It might take the rest of my life to get enough hexagons together to actually form a quilt, but it is a relaxing and fun endeavor. Every time I start a new quilt, I put my little scraps in a box to be used for hexagons. I love this idea, because one day, I will have a scrap quilt that I made by hand from all of my most favorite fabrics. What a treasure to pass down, at least that is the goal.

People tend to think hand sewing is to time consuming, however, it isn't any more time consuming than anything else. I made 42 hexagon on our flight from Utah to Tulsa (with a quick stop in Denver). When you start off with a stack of fabric it looks like you might never finish, but then before you know it you are running out of fabric! It gives a great feeling of accomplishment, and plus they are just fun to play with - little quilter candies!

Market Review - Zen Chic

Brigitte Heitland the creator of Zen Chic fabric was at Market for the first time in Utah! As we passed by her booth we were instantly drawn in by the truly modern design. I love modern quilts, but sometimes they get a little boring because they start looking the same. This is not the case with Mrs. Heitland's quilts. They are uniquely modern, and even more wonderful when you couple them with her fabrics.

We've ordered several of her patterns, and bundles of her fabric. It will cost a few dollars more than other fabrics because she is a private designer (without a major manufacturer) from Germany, but once you see them you will understand how they are worth every single penny. Out of all the things we saw in market this is one of the things I'm most excited to have arrive in the shop, hopefully in the near future.

Speaking of other things we saw and ordered while at Market... It is going to take a couple days to finish sorting through everything and catch up from nearly a week absence, but I will continue adding Market review blogs for you to see. :)

Bernina Quilt Frame

Our Bernina quilt frame has arrived in the shop. We are still waiting on the new Quilt Motion software, but Chris gave us a quick demo today.

The frame that we have for the shop demo is only 5', however, the full sized consumer version extends to 10'! It will hold anything from the Bernina 220 up to the 830.

I can't wait until it is completely set up and ready to play with. I think that we will be hosting special Bernina quilting parties of some sort, but the ideas and plans for that are still in the works. Check back soon, to see how it develops!

Vogue

This is my new vogue pattern along 2 new cottons from the shop. A wonderful light cotton from Anne Klein, and gorgeous horizontal floral cotton. We'll see how that looks on the squatty body! The pattern is plain, but my all-time favorite tops are made just like this- sans pockets. Besides that fabric makes all the difference in patterns. The prints are what turn it from drab to fab!

Are you interested in participating in an online quilting bee? This is a great chance to make friends, learn new techniques, and make a quilt in the process. A basic understanding of quilting and the ability to follow directions is all it takes to participate. It doesn't matter if you are a beginner or expert, this is a great opportunity to have fun in our craft.

SewFlakes Bog would like to sponsor a quilting bee for 12 women for the next year. The women who are chosen to participate will receive exclusive benefits for being a member. These women will also have a special section of recognition on our blog and on the links page of our website so this is a great way to promote your personal blog or Etsy shop.

In case you don't know, a quilting bee is made up of 12 women. Each month one woman is the "host". She sends out a packet of fabric and the instructions for the making of a quilt block (or possibly two) to each of the other 11 ladies in the group. Each of the 11 ladies then makes the block(s) according to the instructions provided and sends the completed blocks back to the host. By the end of the year each lady will have had a turn hosting, and thus will have enough blocks to complete a quilt (or have a good start on one depending on her pattern). In this bee all patterns go. Obviously you don't want to pick something is so complicated that there will be problems making it hard for people to complete. However, part of the fun is the challenge in learning new things.

To become a member of this quilting bee is free, however, there are a few requirements.

You need to purchase at least 2 yards of the fabric to be included in your quilt top from SewFlakes. Members will receive a 20% discount on this fabric purchase, plus other various discounts throughout the year. (Each member will receive a special discount code that will be valid for one use, so everything they order with the fabric for their quilt will also be included in the discount for this one purchase.)
Members need to be able to answer emails between group members within a reasonable amount of time. We will use email to discuss block details, ideas, and what you would like to see as your extra benefits as members.
You have to participate for the complete 12 months. If you don't think this is possible then please don't sign-up because it isn't fair to everyone else who dedicate their time to these projects.
You must provide the fabric and comprehensible instructions for the block(s) you would like to have the other participants make you when it is your turn to host.
Shipping is the responsibility of the sender, whether hosting or participating. (If it is leaving your home it needs to make it to the next destination.)
You need to have a blog that you regularly post on. Even if the blog is new, we want to be sure that everyone can display and share links between the blogs.
You need to be willing to share pictures of your fabric, blocks, and quilts, as they pertain tot he bee, with SewFlakes so we can keep the blog updated with the progress of the club.
If this goes well then we hope to repeat the bee each year. If you participate this year you will not be able to participate next year, so that someone else can have a turn.

Solid Investment -Continued

I've decided to omit a border from the solid crib-quilt because I think it will distract from the fun that are the solids. I've also decided to go ahead and start quilting it instead of letting the top hang in the shop as a sample. Hopefully I can get it quilted pretty quickly.

I went this weekend to get all the embroidery floss for each square. My method of selecting threads caused me to receive a few weird looks, but it also allowed for conversation with a few people which is always fun.

Thankfully Betty is bringing me her bigger quilting frame tomorrow so this will be my last night using my hoop! Besides that I'm excited to try the quilting frame, and hope that all goes well with it so I can get one of my own!

Solid Investment

We've had the Bella Solid Jelly Rolls in Snow in the shop for a couple weeks now, but the Kona Solid charm packs arrived just a few days ago!

For those who don't know, I've been begging for solids for a little while now. (Hi, I'm Trina, the youngest Flake and internet person at SewFlakes.) I'm so excited to know that we have these in the shop finally, and even more excited to know that we have bolts of solid fabric on its way. I can't wait to make thousands of beautiful little projects and big quilts using the solids coupled with some bright, fun, modern prints.

In the meantime I've been warming up with this...

This quilt came out to about a crib-size, and I only used about 15 strips of the jelly roll and 1 charm pack. I'm thinking about using a Kaffe Fassett shot cotton stripes that we've had for a little while because it seems to be the perfect tone for this quilt. I'll be sure to make another post once I've decided for sure about the border.

As for quilting, it will hang in the shop, unquilted, for a while, and then when we are ready for it to be taken home I'm going to embroider little animals and baby/boy related items into each square with a matching thread. Since the backing will be a solid snow color, like the sashing, I think this will be a fun way to get all the colors to show up again on the back. Of course, this is a bit ambitious, so it is a good thing I don't plan on having children for several years!

It is getting deep in here! That's not 2, not 3, but nearly 4 rows of fabric deep! Plus there is fabric in the shelves to either side!

I just spent at least an hour sorting fabric and adding nearly 100 more bolts to our sale area in the back of the store. In case you've never been before, everything back here is marked half-off (with red "x") with a one yard cut minimum. There are trims that are 75% off, and even a few quilt kits marked down to 30% (yellow mark) or more!

With all of this fabric out of the front of the store we are going to be able to order lots more new fabric while we are at Market! (In case anyone is counting, only 19 more days until we leave for Market in Salt Lake City.)

Meet Popcorn aka Mr. Big. This is Chris' cat. (Chris is the shop owner.) You may be wondering why he is on our blog. Well we are playing with the mobile uploading. This just happened to be the picture Chris decided to test it with, and who doesn't like to see a big fat fluffy cat? The good news is that since the uploading worked when we go to Market we will be able to share pictures in "real time" while we are there shopping for the store!!! Exciting!!

Spring Picnicking

If you have ever called to ask for directions to the shop it is very likely we've told you about the statue park next door. Well, you wouldn't believe it because of the weird weather we have had the last few days, but I saw a couple going for a picnic today.

Look at the lovely quilt in their basket! I'm so jealous! This quilt was made using Marcia Derse news fabric lines. Oh how I do love her work. Her designs are interesting and her colors are always so rich, bold, and basically to die for!

We have several of her newest fabrics in the shop, but these 4 happen to be my top picks. You can see all of the fabrics we carry by Marcia Derse on our website. (I just found out that we have at least 4 more bolts headed our way!)

Website Troubles

Our website was attacked in the middle of the night sometime causing the server to shut down. Everything is back to normal now, and we don't expect any mishaps like that again anytime soon because our great design firm took care of it for us. The site is now fully operable and safe for everyone to use.
